The reference for Myriel is Father Myriel from Les Miserables. Father Myriel was the Priest who Val Jean robbed from and helped Val Jean start his road to change. I choose this name reference since this character is the one to take John in and took care of him after his daughter Hazel found him. Im looking for less familiar names for my alien characters. I gave him the design on his scientist outfit as a reference to a Priests robe.

I made this drawing when I decided that Hazel would be a protector of John.

This is a sketch of Hazel's Father, he is also made out of vines, but also wears a lab coat.

I was playing around with head shapes for Hazel and a sketch of Baby John's sleep chamber.

She can use her vines to shoot out to wrap people up and for other things like jumprope!

This is when I got the idea to made Hazel out of vine rather then out of flowers. kind of a tomboy. Some of her vines are unwraped to give her more character

First Sketches

I started out just drawing random creatures of what the different Plant Aliens might look like. The first page on this post is probably the first time that I really felt that I was on to something with the Hazel design. I started out thinking that the air on the planet was non exisitant and John would have to have some sort of breathing device, but then I realized duh everything on the plant is plants. Plants make oxygen. So I got rid of the a breathing device. Im still trying to decide wiether or not to give John some sort of cover to make his human appearance less noticable. I drew my own son Nathan for a reference. I really like the bottom image on the 4th page and the top right image on the last page. I'll probably use them for something else later on. At the very least a background character.
